Christina Hawthorne Takes on the World

One of the issues we talk about A LOT on She Takes on the World is work-life balance, something many women struggle with.

The issue of work-life balance is very prevalent in TNT’s hit series, HawthoRNe. Juggling both family and career, recently-widowed nursing director and mother of a teenage girl, Christina Hawthorne (Jada Pinkett Smith) struggles to hold the middle ground in a battle between bureaucratic administrators, heartless doctors, and apathetic colleagues who are caught up in a system that’s forgotten whom it’s there to serve. How do women do it all?!

HawthoRNe came out on DVD this week and we have a special giveaway from Sony Pictures. One reader will win the official three-disc DVD set of HawthoRNe: The Complete First Season.

To enter, leave a comment letting us know how you maintain your hectic life and balance work, friends, family, and “you” time. What advice do you have for other women?

I read a great article the other day titled `The Entrepreneur’s Quest for balance’ by Lauren Bacon, who wrote `Boss of You’ and you can find it here http://bit.ly/9dZoww

What she wrote really resonated with me as there is no such thing as work-life balance, balance is an ideal that is unachievable and as Lauren states “Work-life balance” implies that work and life are mutually exclusive, which is ludicrous – especially for entrepreneurs.”

If we define our own definition of sanity and enjoying our lives when working and playing I think we’ll be better off than trying to achieve this perfect state of equilibrium that gets bandied about too much.

If you know someone who has got it right then please let me know. Otherwise enjoy the ride and recognise when you need to take some time off and recharge.

Natalie, thanks for the link to The Entrepreneur’s Quest for Balance. Lauren is great! You may also like Find Your Strongest Life by Marcus Buckingham. He talks a lot about “strategic imbalance” which is a principle that really resonates with me.

By the way, looks like you’ll be receiving the Hawthorne DVD collection :) Thanks for your comment!
